How to Sweeten Tea With Honey

How to Sweeten Tea With Honey

Leave processed sugars alone and reach for the honey to sweeten your next cup of tea. While honey does pack in a few more calories per serving than sugar, using local, raw honey boasts antioxidants to fight disease and improve your health. Choose from different varietals of honey to complement your favorite teas and enjoy all the benefits of this natural sweetener.

Step 1

Select pure honey, which is minimally processed to retain beneficial vitamins and minerals. Choose mild-flavored clover and orange blossom honeys to flavor most types of tea. Pair blueberry honey with Earl Grey and English breakfast teas; milk sage honey with orange spice, lemon and mint teas; or buckwheat honey with green and herbal teas.

Step 2

Brew a cup of tea in your usual fashion by pouring near-boiling water over a tea bag in a mug. Steep for three to five minutes.

Step 3

Remove the tea bag, then measure 1 teaspoon of honey. Start by replacing your usual amount of sugar with 1 teaspoon of honey, which is slightly sweeter than sugar. Add the honey to your tea and stir thoroughly to incorporate. Taste the tea and add more honey if necessary.

  • Add a squirt of fresh lemon juice to your tea to increase flavor and incorporate a small amount of vitamin C into your drink.
  • Do not add honey to water that is boiling, as the temperature will destroy the beneficial qualities of the honey.
